St. Augustine, Fla., July 22, 2010—Families at the Project Access Family Resource Center at Hermosa Village Apartments in Anaheim, Calif., are in for a special treat on Saturday, July 31, as chefs from across the country visit the complex’s Family Resource Center to host interactive healthy cooking demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is the first of its kind for the American Culinary Federation (ACF), a national organization of professional chefs, which is holding its national convention at the Anaheim Marriott, Aug. 2-5. More than 40 chefs will arrive early in Anaheim to participate in “Chef Outreach to the Community Day,” which is expected to draw more than 100 participants from Hermosa Village.
“For more than 20 years, promoting proper childhood nutrition has been a priority of the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation’s Chef & Child Foundation,” said Michael Ty, CEC, AAC, ACF national president. “Our chefs volunteer in communities across the U.S., educating children and families about good food choices. We are looking forward to sharing our knowledge with families at Hermosa Village Apartments during our first national Chef Outreach to the Community Day.”
The event is hosted by the American Culinary Federation’s Chef & Child Foundation (CCF), which aims to educate children and families in understanding proper nutrition through community-based initiatives, and fights childhood hunger, malnutrition and obesity. Nutrition and cooking-related content, including healthy and budget-friendly recipes and educational handouts, as well as activities and lessons used by the participating chefs, is provided in partnership with Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline®, a groundbreaking cooking- based program that teaches families how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget.
“Project Access strives to create programs that teach nutrition and better health to the affordable housing communities that we serve,” said Debra Fine, CEO/president of Project Access. “The American Culinary Federation’s Chef & Child Foundation is providing an essential program for this community.”
During the event, families will visit five stations where they will discover new ingredients and learn to cook nutritious dishes. Stations cover fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy drinks and healthy snacks. Families will also leave with five simple healthy recipes — quinoa summer salad; new-wave dippers; brown rice and orange salad; serious berry fruit smoothies; and banana quesadillas — and a gift bag filled with coupons for vegetables, whole grains and more.
